We are retired professionals who are passionate about home improvement projects and decorating, and who recognize an opportunity when we see it.
We once converted a Mexican church into a show-stopping real estate building adding a mezzanine level of glass-walled offices.
It's a passion, not a business.
In 2017, we sold our lakeside executive home near Kingston Ontario and converted this elementary school into an elegant private residence with excellent income -producing potential.
The 40' x 50' gymnasium became the quintessential New York Loft with its 16' ceiling, large windows, 3 sets of patio doors and floor-to-ceiling stone fireplace.
Then we renovated three of the six classrooms, installing glass-paneled garage doors so that we could bring our vintage car collection to become part of the living area.
"The 1000 Islands Schoolhouse Estate"
A 13,000 Sq Ft school offers plenty of storage and a large living area, all on one level ...and Ontario Public Schools of this era are known to be overbuilt and have solid construction.
With five acres of land, it also allowed us to erect a Quonset to hold our Motorhome, our car trailers, tractor and other equipment.
Replacement cost of a building like this today would easily cost between $5 and $6 million. The Ontario Financial Accountability Office (2025) reports the average cost of building a public school today at
(13,000 x $439 = $5,707,000)
Choosing a retired school was the right thing to do.
The challenge was renovating and decorating to create something warm, inviting... a spectacular home with commercial potential.
Did we succeed?
Our participation in home and garden tours—and the reactions of hundreds of visitors over the years—suggest that we did.
But ultimately, that's for you to decide.
Creating The 1000 Islands Schoolhouse Estate was as much fun as it was challenging.
We love the Schoolhouse living environment and have considered pursuing some pretty exciting live-and-work ideas for the property ourselves.
But...
We're approaching our 80s and recognize that it's time to slow down and really retire.
We created the Schoolhouse around the way we wanted to live. Its extraordinary amount and variety of space gave us room for our home, our projects, our hobbies and our ideas.
Now we're ready for someone else to imagine what they might do with it.
Perhaps that someone is you.?
